The Crystal Coast runs on the water. Marinas, boatyards, boat dealers, charter and head boats, tackle shops and ship’s stores, marine-electronics benches, seafood houses — from the Beaufort waterfront to the docks in Morehead City and the marinas tucked along Bogue Sound toward Cape Carteret. Almost all of them are owner-run. And almost none of them are served well by IT companies — because most IT companies have never had to think about salt air, a fuel dock at full occupancy, or a network that has to reach the end of a pier.
We have. Marine and waterfront businesses are some of our most common clients, and their technology problems are genuinely different from an office on dry land. Here’s what actually matters, and what’s worth spending money on.
Wi-Fi that reaches the dock, not just the office
A marina’s network doesn’t stop at the office wall. It has to reach the fuel dock, the ship’s store, the dry-stack, the work bays, and often the slips themselves — through salt air, over distance, in weather. Consumer gear meant for a living room doesn’t survive that, and a single router in the office doesn’t cover it.
What we plan for:
- Outdoor-rated coverage across the piers, fuel dock, and work areas — access points specified for the run and the environment, not whatever was on the shelf.
- A guest / slip-holder network kept completely separate from the business network. Boaters get internet; they never touch your point-of-sale, your fuel management, or the office. That separation (a VLAN) is standard, inexpensive, and the thing most DIY marina setups get wrong.
- Coverage that holds at full occupancy — a holiday weekend with every slip full and a hundred phones connected is the test, not a quiet Tuesday.
This is network setup and management work, and on the water it’s the difference between “the card reader at the fuel dock works” and “we’re cash-only until someone drives out.”
The fuel dock and ship’s store can’t go cash-only
When the internet drops at a marina, it isn’t an inconvenience — it’s a closed register at the fuel dock on the busiest afternoon of the year, with three boats waiting. Card processing, fuel management, and the ship’s-store POS all depend on a connection that stays up when you need it most.
The fix is failover: a second connection (usually cellular) and a router that switches over automatically in seconds, so a dropped primary line doesn’t stop fuel sales or send captains down the sound to a competitor. We set up the business connectivity and the failover, test it, and document how it works — most owners never notice an outage again except in the logs.
Salt air is hard on everything
Salt and humidity corrode connectors, clog fans, and kill drives faster than anywhere inland. A computer that would run five years in a dry office runs two on the water if nobody plans for it. The practical answers aren’t expensive: keep the machines that run the business out of the direct salt path, give them airflow, spec sealed or hardened gear where equipment has to live near the water, and plan a realistic replacement cadence instead of waiting for a failure mid-season. The software the marina runs on
Most marinas and boatyards run on more software than people realize — dockmaster and reservation systems, fuel management, charter and head-boat booking, and the office computer that holds all of it plus QuickBooks. When that machine dies, the season’s bookings and the business’s financials can go with it.
- Back it up like the business depends on it, because it does. An automatic, tested backup with a copy kept off-site turns a dead office PC from a catastrophe into a bad morning. We see the one-unmanaged-computer failure far too often on the water.
- Marine-electronics benches. The shop computer that programs chartplotters and runs diagnostics has to be reliable and current — we keep it maintained so a software update doesn’t strand a customer’s boat.
- Commercial-fishing and seafood operations run regulatory software — vessel trip reports, catch documentation — that has to work during inspection cycles. We keep the hardware and network under it dependable; the application itself stays with its vendor.
Built for the season, tested before it
Everything on the Crystal Coast has to survive the summer peak, and the worst time to discover a problem is the first big weekend.
